Performance and maintenance

About windows:

**Any Windows provides tools and programs designed to keep your computer safe, manage your system, and perform regularly scheduled maintenance that keeps your computer running at optimum performance. Learn how to free up disk space, restore your system, create regularly scheduled tasks, and more.

To determine how much space is available on a disk:
1- Open My Computer.
2- Point to the disk you want to check. The total disk capacity and the amount of free space will appear as a tool tip.
Note:
a- To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
b- If the status bar is visible, the amount of free space appears in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. If you cannot see the free space, drag the right side of the window to enlarge it. To view the status bar, on the View menu, click Status Bar.
c- You can also view the free space and other disk properties by right-clicking the disk and then clicking Properties.

To remove unused desktop icons:
1- Open Display in Control Panel.
2- On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3- Under Desktop cleanup, click Clean Desktop Now.
4- Follow the directions in the Desktop Cleanup Wizard.
Notes:
a- To open Display, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
b- The Desktop Cleanup Wizard displays a list of the desktop icons that have not been used for 60 days or more, enabling you to remove those icons that you don't want on your desktop. You can retrieve icons you have removed by opening the Unused Desktop Shortcuts folder on your desktop.
c- Clear the Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days check box if you don't want the wizard to run automatically every two months.
d- You can remove an individual desktop icon by right-clicking the icon and then clicking Delete.
e- To add or remove the icons for My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, or Internet Explorer, select or clear those items under Desktop icons.

To change the size of the virtual memory paging file:
** You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
1- Open System in Control Panel. 2- On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
3- On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change.
4- Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
5- Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, and type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
6- If you decrease the size of either the initial or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases typically do not require a restart.
Notes:
a- To open System, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
b- To have Windows choose the best paging file size, click System managed size.
c- For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory.
d- To delete a paging file, set both initial size and maximum size to zero, or click No paging file. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not disable or delete the paging file.

To change the performance of foreground and background programs:
1- Open System in Control Panel.
2- On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
3- On the Advanced tab, under Processor scheduling, do one of the following:
- Click Programs to assign more processor resources to the foreground program than the background program.
- Click Background services to assign equal amounts of processor resources to all programs.
Notes
a- To open System, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
b- Choosing the Programs option will result in a smoother, faster response time for your foreground program.
c- If you want a background task, such as a Backup utility, to run faster, choose the Background services option.
d- The Programs option allocates short, variable time slices, or quanta, to running programs, while the Background services option assigns long, fixed quanta.
